Historical Image of the Day


Claudia Jones, immigrant from Trinidad to the United States, leading black feminist and communist. Member of the National Committee of the Communist Party of the USA. Imprisoned four times during the McCarthy years. Deported to Britain in 1955. She continued in her social justice work while in Britain, in particularly defending West Indian communities from attacks by white racists. She also played a major role in introducing Carnival to Britain. She died in 1964, at the age of 49.
