John Brown was a murderer of Kansas farmers in the Pottawatomie Massacre, and in his revolt at Harper's Ferry. A noble cause, but the wrong approach to solve it. He got what he deserved after his capture = death by hanging.
OK, but those innocuous Kansas farmers you mention weren't the Ingalls family. They were pro-slavery fanatics who came over from Missouri to make Kansas a slave state. So it's not exactly as black and white as you paint it.
