Annoyance with Blogger

While my annoyance with the blogspot site has declined significantly since the early years of the blog (among other things the site wouldn't allow us to post for 2 months because of technical problems), their new rule of a maximum of 2000 labels for our posts is really annoying. Not because it's entirely unreasonable, though I don't see what difference it makes to them. But because it is arbitrary and post-dated--we have currently used about 3300 tags in the five years this blog has existed. So in order to use any new tags, which I in fact need for organizing photos for teaching, I have to go back and eliminate about 1300 tags plus some more for future growth. Looks like it'll be a fun weekend!

Lyrad Finally Succumbs

I’ve spent a lot of time ranting about what, on the surface, appears to be innocuous things like, for example, Mark Teixeira, Miracle Whip, or IMDB.com. These are things that make me mad and ranting about them brings me a little bit of joy. While I make no excuses for my hatred, people are often under the wrong impression that my venom is spit randomly. I do have good reason behind each thing but don’t feel the need to explain myself. Anybody subjected to these ravings knows that any attempt to explain my “stupidity” to me only makes it worse. Much of the time, these opinions become hard and fast principles, hatred to live by, if you will, and I’ve rarely been steered wrong by them.

Sometimes, however, much as I’m comfortable with my hatred, one has to pick his battles. Changes in circumstance and the evolution of my reasoning, very occasionally, will necessitate a revision of these principles. I know it has to happen but each time is like passing a kidney stone. Such was the case this week when I found myself ceding one of the main points: the dreaded cellular telephone. I know, it makes me sick as well just writing the words, but there it is. I’ve spent years making fun of people with these silly contraptions as the scream “Buy!” and “Sell!” into the ether in the middle of the dollar store. People pining for their phone that they left at the house, lamenting their un-connectivity, it is to laugh. Yet, here I am with the vibrating pocket. It’s been a couple of days, so the initial shock has worn off, but it still feels like something of a self-betrayal. People seem to like the things, so I suppose that feeling goes away and, plus, it was for a good cause. The majority of my luddite credibility now gone, however I’ve justified it for myself, I’ve come one step closer to falling in line. Next thing you know, I’m going to be signing the papers on an unsecured mortgage before heading to church to baptize my kids. God, what have I become?

HD Format Wars

Alterdestiny has turned into some kind of home electronics/Netflix discussion group all of a sudden. Don't know how that's happened. Anyway, Netflix sent me an email this evening to break the sad news that they will no longer carry the HD-DVD format in preference to Sony's Blu-ray.

"In order to provide the best selection of high definition titles for our members, we have decided to go exclusively with Blu-ray as well [as the studios]."

First of all, since Netflix carries pretty much every DVD under the sun, I don't see how going exclusively one format provides me with the best selection. Still, I wouldn't normally care about something like this, but I was forced to make the format choice a few months ago and went with HD. This format has lost the war due to Sony's influence. A format war does not benefit the consumer in any way. It has forced every person who shelled out hundreds of dollars on the "wrong" format to do so again in if they want a continuing level of quality. On top of it, it gives all the studios who had released HD exclusive movies the opportunity to charge upwards of $30 again so all those saps can replace their discs that are now obsolete. I'm a sucker because my DVD player broke. That's great. I don't know when I'll be able to afford it and, until then, it carves away options for me to review for DVD Verdict. Format wars are fucking hogwash.

Movies on the Intertubes

I noticed that Netflix is starting to offer movies online.

I can see why this works for their business model--not having to pay postage would be pretty huge. But why would someone want to watch a movie on their computer? I can see it if you are on a flight or something.

But computer screens are so small. I wouldn't think it would be a good movie watching experience. Maybe I care about movies more than most people. But I can't imagine choosing to watch a film online rather than on a sizable television screen.

Computer Issues

Regular readers (all 5 of you) may remember in the summer me wondering about buying a laptop. I never did that, in part because my old computer was still working fine. Now however, I'm not so sure. It's slowed down considerably in the last few months, especially upon turning it on. I can't get the left speaker to work, though I know this has nothing to do with the speaker itself. Those are problems I can live with.

Yesterday though, something strange happened. I was working on a Word document and the whole computer froze up. I had no choice but to hit the power button and restart. Everything works fine after doing that except for Word. It says I need to insert the disc I got from Word 03 (shows you how old this thing is, though it is XP capable). I don't have that anymore. Everything else works fine, including the rest of Microsoft Office, like PowerPoint and such.

I ordered another copy, hoping it would be a cheap way of avoiding the inevitable switch to the laptop and an investment I don't want to make with money I don't have. If anyone has any suggestions as to what might be going on and what I can do, I would appreciate it. Right now, not having Word at home isn't that huge of a deal because I'm in full grading mode anyway and I can write in my office, but this is a pretty unacceptable situation.

Apartment Hunting

Is there anything as frustrating as looking for housing in a town you don't know? I am about to move to the Georgetown, Texas area for my new job. I am debating either living in Georgetown or in Austin, which is about 25 miles away. Usually, you can find classified ads online for different kinds of housing. But all I can find for this area are gross apartment complexes. I really don't want to live in one of those, but I am afraid I will have to. Craig's List has a few homes, but they are all huge houses that are too big and expensive. Is it that hard to find some rooms in an old house? Or a small house in an older part of town? Or something that doesn't reek of corporate developer scum? Or am I just not smart enough to work the technology to find what I need?

Buying a Laptop

I need to buy a laptop. I am a total idiot about these things. So I'm asking you all for some advice.

I've never actually purchased a computer before. I've always people around me who do these things so I don't have to. It's usually better for all involved.

A few questions:
1. Mac or PC? I've always worked with a PC but everyone seems to loathe the Vista thing. It seems that the cost, once you include things you have to buy for the PC like antivirus protection will be about the same. So it's a tough call. Mac people love them and I'm sure for good reason. On the other hand, I don't have time right now to figure out a whole new way of using a computer. But I don't want to buy an inferior product and regret it later.

2. Hardware--I don't need a whole lot--enough room for some music, basic Office functions, internet. All of the hardware language is really confusing to me. So any advice would be welcome.

3. Anything else you would recommend? I really don't know what I am doing here.
