Unintended Consequences of Immigration Raids

It turns out that Somali immigrants are replacing the Mexicans and Guatemalans who were shipped back to their home nations during a raid at a Postville, Iowa meatpacking plant. I have wonder how this will turn out, given that the rancor directed at migrant labor in America has virtually nothing to do with their illegal status and almost everything to do with race. You Iowans didn't like Mexicans? Let's see how you like Africans then! This story doesn't address this issue except to quote the mayor that the workers are blending in fine. But I'd really like to hear from the local residents about their once all-white town now having a large number of black people.

Pulverizing Hog Brains Is Not A Good Job

Redbeard (who should blog more) alters us to this story of a mysterious disease striking employees at a Hormel hog slaughtering plant in Minnesota.

The reason--they are inhaling molecules of brain when they use the air compressor to separate the brain from the skull. They routinely get splattered with brain matter and breathe in some. This seems to lead to a neurological problem where the immune system attacks the body.

This is reason #45109 why industrialized meat processing is a bad idea. It is disgusting and dangerous. It is low paying and the industry exploits immigrant labor. It's been bad since before Upton Sinclair wrote The Jungle. They often provide low-quality meat that comes from an unknown farmer to your store.

And their workers breathe in pig brains.
