Arresting Torturers and Murderers in the U.S.

There's a really important article today about the U.S.'s arrest of three Latin Americans (one Argentine and two Peruvians) on charges of immigration violations in the U.S. The case bears important monitoring because the three men are tied to gross human rights violations (torture and murder) in their respective countries. As those interviewed in the article point out, this is a rather unprecedented move in favor of human rights during the Bush administration. No doubt, human rights were not necessarily the primary objective of these arrests, and in no way do these three arrests even remotely begin to address the gross human rights violations the current administration has committed. Still, it is refreshing to see once again how men who were once above indictment are finally having to face the consequences of their actions. And as the article suggests, given the troubles that the arrests of the two Peruvians could cause for Peru's Alan Garcia, it will be worth watching what happens to those to men in particular. Still, it's overall encouraging on the Latin American Front.
