Link of the Day
Raoul Vega celebrates V-C Day by discussing the loathsome John C. Breckinridge, who no doubt will some day be enshrined as part of Forgotten American Bastard Blogging.
Breckinridge was the Southern Democratic nominee for president in 1860 when the party split apart. Why did it split apart? Southern pro-slavery enthusiasts, not satisfied with the Northern part of the party giving them everything they wanted, decided that they would not be part of a party that did not guarantee their property rights (i.e., their rights to own human beings) in any part of the nation.
The rabidly pro-slavery Breckinridge became their candidate. Once the war started, he served for the Confederacy, despite being from Kentucky, and then became the Confederacy's Secretary of War.
Vega suggests the following be added to Breckinridge's statue in Lexington, KY:
BELIEVED THAT THE RIGHT OF WHITE PEOPLE TO OWN BLACK PEOPLE WAS WORTH KILLING FOR
Indeed!
