Depressing Numbers for Women's Reproductive Freedom in Brazil

Just to throw into somber relief how wrong-headed Cardinal Sobrinho was in excommunicating the doctors and mother of the nine-year-old girl who had been raped by her stepfather, there is this depressing statistic:

A new report by Brazil's IPAS, a non-governmental organization that works with the health ministry, indicates that more than 1 million women undergo illegal abortions in Brazil each year. About 250,000 are treated by doctors for traumas due to botched abortions, said Beatriz Jalli, an IPAS official.
Though it won't happen, I'd like to see the Catholic Church try to excommunicate more than one million people in one of the biggest Catholic countries in the world. More than that, though, I'd like to see more realistic legal and safe options available for women in Brazil and throughout the world.
