Mister Trend's Random 10
"Ogunde" is the opening track from Expressions, the posthumous album from Coltrane's last studio session. I'm a little...ambivalent isn't quite the right word...about Coltrane. I agree with Erik that Coltrane dominates the late-20th-century jazz narrative way too much, at the expense of artists like Ornette Coleman, Joe McPhee, and others. But you listen to a track like Ogunde, and it's clear that Coltrane was still one of the masters, the way he explored the limits of the sax, and I really really like his latter years when he had Pharoah Sanders and Rashied Ali with him. The entire Expressions album is great, and really underrated in the Coltrane catalogue. I guess, I hate in some ways to add to the "Coltrane is so great" cult even further, but this album is really worth checking out.
