Latin Americans weren't born yesterday

If one wants to understand why Bush's rhetoric on his Latin America trip has rung hollow on most ears here, one only needs to look here to see how popular opinion, both from the left and the right, is not simply distrustful of Bush, but rather is simply unbelieving. It's bad when even one of your own senior administration officials, who is supporting you on this stuff, says “For close to 20 years of democratic processes and rhetoric about the benefits of democracy and free markets, the average person is waking up and saying, how’s my life gotten better?” (Short answer for the majority of those average persons: "it hasn't". Hence the growing gaps in income and the leftward shift in Latin America in the last 5 years.)
