Bad Stuff in El Salvador

I know the phrases "El Salvador" and "very bad" are redundant, but I thought I'd mention the recent killing of Father Ricardo Antonio Romero outside of San Salvador on September 25. There are two plausible reasons. The first is that he was killed by gangs. The second, and I believe more likely, is that Romero was killed for his work with the poor. Evidentally, death squads are on the rise in that unfortunate country.

Sadly, Romero is hardly the first priest by that name to die in El Salvador while fighting injustice.

The same post discusses the nation's environmental problems as well, focusing on the destruction of one of El Salvador's last remaining forest tracts to make way for a highway, shopping centers, and a golf course. Nice. The response to this has forced the government to agree to save some of the forest but given the record of environmental enforcement in Central America, I remain skeptical.

And in classic El Salvador mode, this blog, entitled 100 días en la República de la Muerte (100 Days in the Republic of Death), is going over every murder committed in the small nation. Sadly, it is hardly a few. I suppose that people develop dark senses of humor to deal with living in El Salvador.

Sigh.
