Saving the Amazon Rainforest

Alana Herro writes of NGOs attempting to halt all Amazon deforestation by 2015. I wonder if this is possible. She claims that with a large cash infusion from foreign donors that this is possible. I'm intrigued but highly skeptical. Lula has not proven to be a leader on environmental issues. Logging, mining, and cattle interests still are expanding in the region. Will the enforcement ever be there to stop these people? Saving these forests is something of a world emergency, and not for aesthetic reasons. The oxygen these trees provide is going to be key in doing anything to fight climate change. In fact, we need a pretty heavy reversal in forest use to try and convert some of that carbon dioxide into oxygen.

Still, plans like these can only be positive and I hope they succeed.
